Chapter 7 - MARGARET'S DEATH

Margaret Hart died in 1996.

Her death had always been called tragic.

Young woman.

Prescription pills.

Alcohol.

No criminal case.

Then Collins pulled the original report.

One paragraph had been amended after filing.

Peter Vale.

He said Margaret planned to leave town with baby Michael.

The amended report said she had been depressed over a failed relationship.

That relationship was my father.

Robert Hale.

I felt like I was reading a stranger's life.

Peter finally spoke.

"Robert wanted Michael."

"Then why hide who he was?"

"Because your mother agreed to raise him only if no one knew."

"My mother raised my father's affair child?"

Peter nodded.

"She believed the scandal would destroy both families."

The sentence wealthy families use before doing something cruel.

Protect the family.

Collins asked:

"How did Margaret die?"

Peter's face tightened.

"Officially? Overdose."

"Unofficially?"

"I don't know."

"You were there."

"I arrived after."

"Who was with her?"

Peter looked toward the door.

"Evelyn."

Collins leaned forward.

"Why was that removed from the final report?"

"Charles insisted."

"Why?"

Peter shook his head.

"I was twenty-seven. I did what he told me."

Then he gave us something useful.

A storage archive in Hart Legacy's basement.

Charles never trusted digital systems.

Police obtained a warrant.

Inside they found Margaret's letters.

One was addressed to Robert.

I want Michael to know who I am.

Another to Evelyn.

You don't get to decide my son belongs to the family more than I do.

The last was dated three days before her death.

If anything happens to me, do not let Charles take Michael's inheritance.

Inheritance.

Margaret had money too.

A trust from her grandmother.

Where did it go after she died?

Rachel traced it.

The remainder transferred into Hart Family Holdings.

Controlled by Charles.

Later Evelyn.

Michael never received it.

Almost nine hundred thousand dollars in 1996.

Michael had spent his life believing Evelyn was the aunt protecting him.

What if she was the person whose family took his mother's money?

Then Collins found a recorded voicemail in the archive.

Margaret's voice.

"I know what you moved, Evie."

Then Evelyn.

"You are not taking Michael away."

Margaret shouting.

Recording ends.

But enough to reopen questions.

Then Collins looked at me.

"Daniel, we need to consider something."

"What?"

"Michael may not be Evelyn's partner in the way we assumed."

"He helped her target Lily."

"Yes."

"But what if he also thought the trust money belonged to him?"

I stared at the missing transfers.

Evelyn may have spent years telling Michael one story:

The Harts stole your inheritance.

Anna's trust is your correction.

And Lily stood between him and the money he thought his mother had been denied.
