Chapter 1 - THE SUITCASE

“Daddy… please open it before she comes back.”
Ethan Hale stopped halfway across the living room.
The voice was small. Muffled. Terrified.
It came from a black hard-shell suitcase beside the fireplace.
Then the suitcase moved.
“Sophie?”
A tiny fist pounded from inside.
“Daddy!”
His briefcase hit the floor.
“Keep talking to me.”
He grabbed the iron poker from the fireplace and forced only the external lock. The latch snapped. The lid flew open.
His six-year-old daughter stared up at him, awake, breathing normally, physically unharmed—and shaking so hard her teeth clicked.
Ethan dropped to his knees.
“Oh my God.”
Sophie launched herself into his arms.
He held her against his chest while fury moved through him like heat.
“Who did this?”
She clutched a photograph of her late mother.
“She said Mom’s room belongs to someone else now.”
Ethan slowly looked toward the grand staircase.
Celeste stood there.
His wife.
In one hand she held two passports. In the other, airline tickets.
Behind her stood Richard Cole, Ethan’s oldest friend and chief financial officer.
Richard’s shirt was open. His belt was unfastened.
Celeste saw the suitcase.
Everything fell from her hands.
Sophie whispered, “She said we were leaving before you got home.”
Ethan picked up the top ticket.
New York to Zurich.
One-way.
Passenger: SOPHIE HALE.
His voice became frighteningly quiet.
“Where exactly were you taking my daughter?”
Celeste opened her mouth.
Sophie lifted the photograph.
“Mom wrote something on the back before she died.”
Ethan turned it over.
Amelia’s handwriting filled three short lines:
ETHAN—IF RICHARD EVER ENTERS MY BLUE ROOM AFTER I’M GONE, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.
OPEN THE WALL BEHIND SOPHIE’S HEIGHT MARKS.
CALL MARA QUINN.
Ethan looked from the photograph to Richard.

Richard stopped buttoning his shirt.
And for the first time in twenty years of friendship, Ethan saw fear in his eyes.
