Chapter 18 - THE HEARING

At the protective-order hearing, Celeste looked directly at Sophie only once.

Sophie was not in the courtroom.

Her photograph was attached to one sealed filing.

That was enough.

Celeste’s attorney argued that the suitcase incident was brief, impulsive, and never intended to injure.

The judge answered:

“A child does not need a broken bone for confinement to be terrifying.”

Ethan sat still.

He did not need the judge to be dramatic.

He needed the record to be clear.

Celeste was ordered to have no contact with Sophie pending the criminal and family proceedings.

The forged travel consent became part of the case.

So did the Swiss guardianship draft.

Richard’s attorneys fought every financial allegation.

That case would take longer.

Months, probably years.

But the company removed him immediately.

The trust restored the original independent trustee.

Sophie’s shares stayed untouched.

Mara became trust counsel but refused to become trustee.

“Too much power in one person is how you got here,” she said.

Ethan agreed.

He changed company procedures too.

No executive could alter family-controlled voting documents without two independent reviews.

No one person could control executive communications credentials.

No board packet could be approved without a tracked comparison to prior versions.

Then came the part Ethan dreaded.

He had to decide what to do with Amelia’s blue room.

Sophie stood in the doorway.

“Can we put her clothes back?”

“Some of them.”

“And take Mr. Richard’s chair out?”

“Yes.”

They carried it together into the hall.

Sophie laughed when it got stuck in the doorway.

The sound surprised both of them.

Then she found something beneath the chair cushion.

A hotel key card.

Not local.

Montreal.

Dated six months earlier.

Ethan stared.

Richard had traveled there secretly.

Mara checked Halcyon records.

The same week, Halcyon wired two million dollars to a Canadian company.

The corporate fraud was bigger than Northstar.

But this time Ethan did not chase it alone.

He called the investigators.
