Chapter 10 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER MET HER

Dr. Mercer lived in Greenwich.
State police interviewed him that night.
He admitted Richard paid him as a corporate wellness consultant.
He denied knowing the letter would be used in court.
“You described Sophie as fearful of her father,” the detective said.
Mercer looked uncomfortable.
“Based on collateral information.”
“From who?”
“Mr. Cole and Mrs. Hale.”
“You never met the child?”
“No.”
“You never met Ethan?”
“No.”
Yet he wrote:
PATERNAL GRIEF MAY CREATE AN UNSTABLE DOMESTIC ENVIRONMENT.
Mercer turned over emails.
Celeste fed him stories.
Ethan traveled constantly.
Ethan kept Amelia’s bedroom untouched.
Ethan became angry when anyone discussed moving on.
All true in some form.
None proved he was dangerous.
Richard shaped ordinary grief into a weapon.
Then one email changed the case.
Richard to Mercer:
WE ONLY NEED ENOUGH FOR SWISS INTAKE. ONCE SOPHIE IS RESIDENT, THE TRUSTEE QUESTION GETS EASIER.
Mara read it twice.
“There.”
“What?” Ethan asked.
“The real reason for Zurich.”
Montreux House was not just a school.
Westmere offered private family-office services to international clients.
Once a child became resident under their program, Westmere would petition to act as local financial guardian for assets held through affiliated structures.
Richard controlled Halcyon.
Halcyon financed Westmere.
He was building a path from Sophie’s residence to her shares.
Not legally guaranteed.
But enough to create litigation, delay, and leverage.
Then Mercer handed over one more email.
Celeste wrote:
SOPHIE KEEPS CARRYING AMELIA’S PHOTO. I THINK THERE IS SOMETHING WRITTEN ON IT.
Richard replied:
GET THE PHOTO BEFORE ETHAN COMES HOME.
Ethan looked toward Sophie’s room.
The photograph had not been sentimental to them.

It had been evidence.
And Sophie had protected it with her body inside the suitcase.
