Chapter 14 - THE AIRPORT

Police reached the airport before Richard boarded.
He never made it through security.
A customs alert flagged the false name attached to his ticket.
Richard did not resist.
He smiled when detectives approached.
That bothered Ethan.
People smile when they think the real damage is already done.
Richard carried no blue box.
No founder ledger.
No obvious company records.
Just a laptop and one envelope.
The envelope contained a signed resignation letter.
Ethan’s resignation.
Forged.
Dated Monday.
The laptop contained a draft press release:
ETHAN HALE STEPS DOWN FOLLOWING FAMILY CRISIS.
Another draft announced Daniel as interim CEO.
Daniel stared at it when police showed him.
“I never agreed to this.”
Maybe Richard expected Daniel to comply once chaos started.
Maybe he expected the board to force it.
Either way, Ethan finally understood the full plan.
Sophie disappears to Zurich.
Celeste disappears with her.
The affair becomes public.
Ethan looks unstable.
A forged resignation circulates.
Northstar passes under emergency leadership.
Richard controls the new trust structure.
By the time Ethan proves anything, the company is tied in litigation across two countries.
It was not genius.
It was paperwork, timing, and people trusting the wrong man.
Richard requested a lawyer.
Then he asked to speak to Ethan.
Ethan refused.
Richard laughed.
“Tell him Amelia knew more than he thinks.”
Mara heard the message.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan did not know.
Police searched Richard’s laptop.
One encrypted folder was named A.H.
They obtained access through a corporate backup key.
A.H. meant Amelia Hale.
Inside were copies of her private emails.
Medical appointments.
Draft wills.
Messages to Mara.
Richard had been reading Amelia’s correspondence while she was dying.
Then one email appeared that neither Ethan nor Mara had ever seen.
From Amelia to Richard.
