Chapter 19 - WHAT HOME MEANS

Six months later, the mansion was quieter.
Not empty.
Different.
The legal cases continued.
Richard’s financial network expanded into Canada and several shell companies.
Celeste eventually accepted a plea on charges tied to the confinement and forged travel documents, while other allegations were resolved through the courts.
Ethan stopped reading every filing at midnight.
That was Mara’s job now.
His job at seven-thirty was pancakes.
He was bad at them.
Sophie ate them anyway.
Therapy helped.
Not magically.
Some nights Sophie still woke after dreaming she could not open a lid.
Ethan never told her it was “only a dream.”
He sat on the floor and waited until she knew where she was.
They changed Amelia’s room together.
Half remained memory.
Her books.
Her perfume bottle.
The chair where she read to Sophie.
The other half became an art room.
Sophie painted badly and proudly.
One wall carried her height marks.
They left the secret panel visible.
Not because they needed it anymore.
Because Sophie said secrets were less scary when you could see where they used to be.
Daniel came for dinner sometimes.
Trust returned slowly.
He asked questions before signing things.
One evening Sophie asked Ethan:
“Are you going to get married again?”
He nearly dropped a plate.
“Not tomorrow.”
She laughed.
“If you do, can I meet her before she moves in?”
“Yes.”
“And can Mom’s room still be partly Mom’s?”
“Yes.”
“And if I don’t like her?”
“We talk about why.”
Sophie nodded.
“Okay.”
Then she asked the harder question.
“Why didn’t you know Celeste was bad?”
Ethan sat down.
“Because people are not always one thing. And because I ignored things I should have noticed.”
“Will you do that again?”
“Probably sometimes.”
Her eyes widened.
He smiled sadly.
May you like
“But I can promise I’ll listen sooner.”
That answer she believed.
