Chapter 17 - AMELIA’S FINAL INSTRUCTION

Mara brought the envelope to the mansion that evening.

FOR ETHAN — AFTER THE EMERGENCY IS OVER.

Ethan almost laughed.

Amelia knew him well enough to know he would read everything else first.

He opened it with Sophie beside him.

Ethan,

If someone ever comes after Sophie because of what I left her, your first instinct will be to build higher walls.

Please don’t.

He stopped.

Sophie leaned against his arm.

Amelia continued.

Do not make fear her inheritance too.

The shares are money. The house is property. None of it matters if Sophie grows up believing love means surveillance, control, or never being allowed out of your sight.

Ethan closed his eyes.

In forty-eight hours, he had doubled security, canceled school, and considered moving them to a guarded property.

All understandable.

All capable of becoming another cage.

The letter continued.

Ask her what makes her feel safe. Do not assume you know because you are her father.

Ethan looked down.

“Sophie?”

“Yes?”

“What would make you feel safe tonight?”

She thought.

“Can my door stay open?”

“Yes.”

“Can Bunny sleep with me?”

“Obviously.”

“Can you not go to New York tomorrow?”

He had a major investor meeting.

Old Ethan would have explained why it mattered.

New Ethan said:

“Yes.”

Sophie relaxed.

Then she asked:

“Can Mom’s room stay Mom’s room?”

Ethan hesitated.

Amelia’s room had become a battlefield because nobody knew what to do with grief.

“What if we decide together what happens to it?”

Sophie considered that.

“Okay.”

The final line of Amelia’s letter read:

Believe Sophie before you believe the version of her that powerful adults need.

Ethan folded the page.

Then Sophie whispered:

“Celeste said you would believe her because she’s your wife.”

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“She was wrong.”

Sophie looked at him.

“Not at first.”

He understood.

The night before the suitcase, Sophie had tried to tell him Celeste was changing Mom’s room.

He had said:

“Give her a chance.”

May you like

Sophie remembered.

So did he.
