Chapter 13 - THE CHILD IN BOSTON

Her name was Sophie.
Cynthia claimed she adopted Sophie privately after a family tragedy.
Alexander stared at a picture.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
Police obtained an emergency DNA order.
Cynthia fought it.
Lost.
Sophie’s sample matched Alexander and Margaret as genetic parents.
The room went silent.
Two years earlier, Vanessa had carried Margaret and Alexander’s embryo to term.
Then Cynthia took the baby and raised her as her own.
At the time Sophie was born, Margaret had not yet been legally declared dead.
Any biological child of Alexander and Margaret could inherit under the old Whitmore family trust.
But only if acknowledged.
Cynthia kept Sophie hidden from that system.
A spare heir.
A child she could reveal if needed.
Then Vanessa married Alexander.
The second plan began.
Fake pregnancy.
Second embryo.
New trust designed to route control through Cynthia.
Margaret asked one question:
“Where is she now?”
Cynthia’s nanny had taken Sophie to a country house outside Boston.
Police arrived before Cynthia’s relatives could move her.
The child was safe.
She did not know Alexander.
She did not know Margaret.
She knew Cynthia as Mommy.
Biology did not erase two years of attachment.
Margaret understood immediately.
“We do not rip her away.”
Alexander nodded.
Samuel arranged independent child advocates and family court oversight.
Sophie needed transition, not another theft disguised as love.
Cynthia began talking anyway.
She blamed Vanessa for the fake pregnancy.
Rowan for the medical fraud.
Eleanor for introducing the families.
Then she said the name nobody expected.
Samuel Reed.
The family attorney standing beside Alexander.
“He drafted the first version of the baby trust.”
Everyone looked at him.
Samuel’s face did not move.
May you like
Cynthia smiled.
“You think I built this without a lawyer?”
