Chapter 17 - THE LAST GUARDIAN

Caroline claimed she only wanted to “protect the family.”
I had heard that phrase too many times.
The guardianship letter had no legal force, but it revealed another layer of the plan.
Cynthia had not been the only planned guardian.
If Cynthia became unavailable, Caroline was next.
Police searched Caroline’s home.
They found storage boxes full of press clippings about the Whitmores.
Photographs of Alexander.
Margaret.
Sophie.
Daniel’s nursery plans.
One wall calendar contained dates for company votes.
The scheme was not only Cynthia’s.
Caroline had helped design the long game.
She had introduced Cynthia to Rowan.
She had funded New Dawn’s first property.
She had taught her daughters to see the Whitmore family as a system to enter.
Why?
Her late husband had once been a Whitmore executive.
Alexander’s father fired him after an embezzlement investigation.
Caroline spent years believing the Whitmores destroyed her family and raised Cynthia and Vanessa on that grievance.
Eleanor listened to the history.
Then said quietly:
“We create enemies when we assume money makes our side automatically right.”
Alexander looked at her.
“That sounds new.”
“It is.”
Caroline was charged too.
The legal cases would take years; the emotional ones longer.
Margaret and Daniel left the hospital through a private exit.
She did not go to Alexander’s mansion.
She rented a house under her own name.
Alexander paid nothing unless she approved it through counsel, and learned to accept the boundary.
Sophie began supervised transition visits with Margaret and Alexander.
At the first one, she cried for Cynthia.
Margaret cried in the bathroom afterward.
But she returned.
Then Lily received a handwritten card.
From Alexander.
Lily read it twice.
Then asked me:
“Can I frame this?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
She looked proud.
May you like
Then she said:
“I still think it was obviously a pillow.”
