Chapter 4 - THE STORY THEY TOLD MARGARET

Alexander did not shout.
That scared me more than if he had.
“What did they tell her about me?”
Rowan refused to answer.
His attorney arrived.
The interview stopped.
Vanessa was taken to a separate room.
Cynthia demanded to leave.
Police denied that request until they established whether Margaret was being held against her will.
Then Samuel found something in the baby trust.
The trust used a pregnancy certification signed by Rowan, but the attached Haven lab number belonged to Margaret, not Vanessa.
Alexander stared.
“So Margaret’s actual pregnancy was used to create Vanessa’s fake one.”
Samuel nodded.
“At least on paper.”
The plan was becoming clear.
But why keep Margaret alive?
And why convince her Alexander was dangerous?
He had donated millions to it.
We pulled donor records.
New Dawn rented the recovery property from Cynthia’s company.
At midnight, detectives raided the house.
Margaret was not there.
But they found a bedroom prepared for a pregnant woman.
Prenatal medication.
Clothes.
Books.
And a stack of printed news stories about Alexander.
All altered.
Headlines accused him of violence.
Financial crimes.
Driving his first wife into hiding.
One fake article even claimed Alexander had been arrested after Margaret vanished.
Then an officer found a framed photograph beside the bed.
Alexander and Vanessa at their wedding.
Across Alexander’s face, someone had written in red marker:
HE REPLACED YOU BEFORE THEY FOUND YOUR BODY.
Alexander sat down.
“They made her believe I wanted her dead.”
Samuel turned over the frame.
A note was taped behind it.
MARGARET WILL NOT CONTACT HIM UNTIL AFTER DELIVERY.
