Chapter 14 - THE ATTORNEY

He handed over his phone before anyone asked.
“I drafted a trust,” he said. “I did not draft this trust.”
He explained that Vanessa asked him for estate planning after announcing her pregnancy.
His first draft returned the shares to Alexander if the child died.
The final signed version routed them to Cynthia as guardian.
Somebody replaced four pages before execution.
Alexander remembered signing electronically during a flight.
Samuel remembered objecting to last-minute changes.
Cynthia’s accusation was half true.
Samuel built the legal structure.
Someone else weaponized it.
Who had access?
Vanessa.
Cynthia.
Rowan for medical attachments.
And Eleanor’s family office, which handled signatures.
Eleanor’s devices produced one deleted message.
From her assistant:
Mrs. Whitmore, Cynthia says the trust revision is required for continuity if Alexander becomes incapacitated.
Eleanor replied:
If Samuel approved, process it.
Samuel had not approved.
The assistant assumed he had.
Then my team recovered a hotel camera clip nobody had requested.
The night before the gala, Samuel met Vanessa in the lobby.
They argued.
Lip-reading software was useless.
But the audio from a nearby security desk caught one line.
Samuel said:
“If Alexander learns Margaret’s name is still active in the fertility system, everything stops.”
Vanessa answered:
“Then make sure he doesn’t.”
Three weeks earlier, he discovered Margaret’s identity had never been fully removed from Haven records.
He suspected a clerical error.
Vanessa pressured him not to tell Alexander until after the baby trust was signed.
“And you agreed?” Alexander asked.
“For seventy-two hours.”
“Why?”
“Because she told me revealing an old record would destabilize your pregnant wife.”
Then he handed Alexander one last document.
A sealed letter from Margaret.
Dated three years earlier.
Sent to Samuel.
He had never opened it because Cynthia told him Margaret’s signature was forged.
Alexander tore it open.

Inside, Margaret had written:
SAMUEL, I AM ALIVE. PLEASE TELL MY HUSBAND.
