Chapter 5 - BABY TRANSFER

The phrase made every person in the room stop.
“Baby transfer?” Alexander said.
Samuel read the rest.
Hospital discharge through Haven.
Infant identity file under Vanessa Whitmore.
Margaret relocation under New Dawn protection.
They intended to take Margaret’s baby and publicly present the child as Vanessa’s.
After months of padded dresses, controlled appointments, and a lying doctor, a real infant would make the fraud look complete.
The trust would activate fully at birth.
Alexander turned to Dr. Rowan’s attorney.
“Did he know they were stealing a child?”
The attorney said nothing.
Lily was asleep in my office by then.
I sat beside her for a minute.
She had exposed the entire thing because she noticed a cushion.
Adults had watched photographs, press interviews, medical letters, charity events.
Nobody looked closely.
A child did.
My control-room operator called again.
“We found another deleted clip.”
The hotel backed up deleted hallway footage for twenty-four hours.
At 5:03 p.m., Margaret opened Suite 2207 and tried to step into the hall. Cynthia blocked her. Rowan arrived. Then Vanessa appeared without the fake belly, touched her own stomach, and pointed at Margaret’s. Even without sound, the threat was obvious.
Cynthia dragged Margaret back inside.
Rowan closed the door.
Then my hotel desk called.
A taxi driver had returned because a passenger left a bag in his car.
He had picked up a pregnant woman three hours earlier near the hotel garage.
Alone.
No Cynthia.
No doctor.
The driver remembered where she asked to go.
St. Catherine’s Church.

Alexander stood.
“My wife and I were married there.”
