Chapter 1 - The Water Cup

Marcus poured water into a fourteen-year-old boy's dinner. Every inmate expected him to cry. Nobody expected the boy to threaten the most feared man in Greywater.
Rice floated across the plastic tray. A piece of chicken slid into the boy's lap. The men at the next table laughed, but their laughter sounded thin in the enormous prison cafeteria.
"Fresh meat," Marcus said. Tattoos crawled from his wrists to his neck. He had been at Greywater for twenty-three years and acted as though the building belonged to him. "You gonna cry?"
The boy carefully put down his fork. His orange jumpsuit was too wide at the shoulders, and one ankle disappeared inside a folded pant leg.
"You just wasted my food," he said. "And you're going to regret it."
Marcus grinned. "Hear that? Little man made a threat."
At the far end of the cafeteria, Solomon Briggs pushed back his chair.
Sol was seventy-two. He'd been locked up for forty years, long enough to watch three wardens retire and two die. He was not a man who stood for anything he could survive sitting through.
But he was standing now, staring at the boy's face.
"Owen?" he whispered.
Two men beside Sol rose. Another followed. In the space of a few breaths, the joking stopped. Marcus glanced around, annoyed that his audience had found something more interesting than him.
Owen Finch kept his hands on the table. His palms were damp. He wanted to look at the back doors, but the man who had brought him here had warned him not to.
Don't stare at the exits. Don't ask questions. Watch who comes to you.
Then the reinforced doors clicked open.
An unfamiliar woman in a gray blazer stepped through with two uniformed officers. She held a clipboard, but the expression on her face was nothing like the routine inspection Owen had imagined.
"Which one of you is responsible for the minor?" she demanded.
May you like
Marcus let go of Owen's water cup.
Behind the woman, Captain Voss reached for the emergency lockdown switch.
