Chapter 6 - The Recording

Two officers took Owen into a small interview room with a camera bolted above the door. The walls were bare except for a framed notice about cooperating with investigations.

Captain Voss sat opposite him. "The warden wants you to explain why you came here."

"He brought me."

"That isn't the statement we're taking."

She placed a microphone between them and handed him a sheet of paper. It claimed he had entered Greywater using a stolen identity, hoping to help convicted men pass secret messages. At the bottom was a line calling Andrew Finch a thief.

Owen read it twice. "If I say this, are you letting me go?"

Voss said nothing.

"Then why would I say it?"

She studied him, a tired woman who looked older than she had in the cafeteria. "Because someone told Greer the state was coming today. He moved fast. Faster than he's ever moved."

"You're scared of him."

"I'm afraid of what happens when everybody keeps pretending he's in charge of the truth."

Voss leaned forward and lowered her voice. "I didn't authorize your transport. I can prove that, if I get out of this building with my job and my life."

Owen almost believed her. Then he remembered her ordering the intake desk to create a record.

"You told them to make me a prisoner."

"I was wrong," she said, without defending it.

The camera's little green light blinked above them.

Owen pushed the false statement away. "My father worked here. He found something. I saw him behind the infirmary glass. That's what I know."

Voss looked toward the camera, then reached under the table and switched off the microphone.

"There is a second infirmary," she whispered. "And somebody just ordered me to take you there."
