Chapter 15 - The Voice in the Warehouse

Police found Andrew Finch sitting against a stack of wooden pallets, wrapped in a stained blanket. He was dehydrated and bruised, but conscious. When an emergency medical technician asked his name, he gave it clearly, then demanded to know where his son was.
"He's safe," Deputy Kim said. "He's with his mother."
Andrew closed his eyes and wept without making a sound.
At the motel, Owen heard his father's voice over a carefully arranged phone call from the hospital.
"Hey, bug," Andrew said.
Owen gripped the phone with both hands. "Dad?"
"It's me."
"They told me you ran away."
"I know. I'm sorry. I didn't leave you."
Owen tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. Iris took the phone only long enough to hear Andrew say he was alive. Then she folded over the bed, crying with relief and anger at the same time.
In the hospital, Andrew explained what he'd uncovered. Meridian had been moving selected prisoners to a shuttered pumping station and billing the state for medical treatment. The prisoners were ordered to dismantle contaminated machinery. Their injuries were disguised as routine illnesses or departures. A worker had died after a delayed emergency call.
Andrew had copied the work orders and threatened to report the operation. Greer had him abducted from his truck. Pierce's office then buried the complaints.
"Why not just destroy the papers?" Grant asked.
"They tried. But there was something they couldn't change."
Andrew reached toward his hospital gown. His hand trembled.
"Every truck passed through a public weighing station," he said. "The scale records are held outside the prison system. I sent the transaction numbers to a friend before they grabbed me."
"Who was the friend?"

Andrew stared at the doorway, suddenly afraid again.
"A man in Pierce's own office," he said. "And that man stopped answering three days ago."
