Chapter 9 - The Gate Opens Twice

"Hands where I can see them," Voss ordered.

The driver stopped. He slowly removed a folded transport manifest, not a weapon. Owen had never been so relieved to see a piece of paper.

Outside, Deputy Kim repeated her demand over the speaker. The outer gate began to rise. The driver lunged toward the van, but Voss snatched his keys and threw them onto the concrete.

"Nobody takes the child," she said.

Kim entered with two deputies and Celia Grant. Grant went straight to Owen, checking his face and hands before asking if he needed medical help.

"My dad," Owen said. "He's somewhere here."

"We're not leaving that out of the report."

"That's not what I asked."

Grant looked at him for a long moment. "I know. We're going to look. But first we're getting you away from the people who brought you here."

Voss turned over the false intake record, the driver's manifest, and the recording she had refused to let the officers erase. She also surrendered her badge while the deputies decided whether to detain her.

Across the ramp, Warden Greer appeared with his attorney on speakerphone. He claimed Owen had wandered in during a staff tour. He claimed the van was only there to take a sick prisoner to a hospital.

"Then who ordered a booking number for him?" Grant asked.

Greer smiled. "Administrative mistakes happen."

Owen lifted his blank wristband. "You had a picture with my face and the wrong birthday. That wasn't a mistake."

For once, adults listened without telling him to be quiet.

The driver was handcuffed. The deputies escorted Owen toward the gate. He stopped when the interior doors opened behind them.

A stretcher rolled past, covered with a sheet.

Under the sheet, a familiar hand tapped twice against the rail.
