Chapter 10 - The Copy

Officer Reed entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
“I’m not giving you school property,” he said. “I’m preserving a copy of evidence that could otherwise disappear.”
Evelyn nodded. “Good distinction.”
They watched the video together.
Grace hated seeing it.
Not because she looked weak.
Because she looked alone.
Brittany approached with the tray.
Kayla blocked the aisle.
The food came down.
The laughter started.
Then the shove.
The hair grab.
The punch.
Grace’s movements after that were controlled and brief. She released both girls as soon as the threat stopped.
Evelyn paused the recording.
“There is no reasonable reading of this where you were the aggressor.”
Grace stared at the screen.
“Then why do I still feel like I did something wrong?”
David answered quietly.
“Because good people ask themselves that question.”
Officer Reed’s phone rang.
He listened for less than a minute.
Then his face changed.
“What happened?” Grace asked.
“The school board scheduled an emergency disciplinary hearing for tomorrow morning.”
“For me?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked surprised. “That’s fast.”
“Too fast,” Reed said.
Grace knew what he meant.
They wanted a decision before the evidence spread.
Evelyn closed her laptop.
“Then we go.”
David looked at Grace. “Your choice.”
She thought about Maya.
Thirty-seven names.
Students who had left, hidden, stayed silent.
Grace had spent her entire life avoiding attention.
Now attention might be the only thing that protected them.
“I’ll go,” she said.
At 11:42 p.m., her phone buzzed one last time.
Brittany had posted a video online.
It showed only seven seconds.
Grace forcing Kayla down.
Grace pinning Brittany against the table.
Nothing before it.
