Chapter 9 - Facts First

Grace waited until school ended before showing her father the spreadsheet.

David read every line at the kitchen table.

He did not swear.

That was how Grace knew he was furious.

“Thirty-seven?” he asked.

“Maybe more.”

“Back it up.”

“I already did.”

“Again.”

They copied the files onto two flash drives, an external hard drive, and a private cloud account.

Then David called a lawyer.

Not a powerful lawyer.

A former patient advocate named Evelyn Shaw who had helped his hospital department through a whistleblower case three years earlier.

She arrived at their house at nine that night carrying a laptop and a legal pad.

By ten, she had stopped looking tired.

“This is bigger than bullying,” she said.

Grace sat across from her. “What is it?”

“Potential destruction of records. Retaliation. Failure to protect students. Maybe more.”

David leaned forward. “What do we do?”

“We don’t give the school the only copies.”

Grace’s phone rang.

Officer Reed.

She put him on speaker.

“I recovered part of the deleted cafeteria video from local storage,” he said.

Grace stood.

“Does it show everything?”

“Enough.”

Brittany dumping the tray. Kayla shoving Grace. Brittany grabbing her hair. The first punch.

Grace closed her eyes.

For the first time in two days, she could breathe.

Then Officer Reed continued.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?” David asked.

“Someone just filed a complaint against me for mishandling student data.”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Who filed it?”

“Assistant Principal Crane.”

Grace looked at the spreadsheet.

They were trying to remove the one officer who had questioned the story.

Officer Reed lowered his voice.

“I’ve been ordered off campus pending review.”

Grace felt the room tilt.

“Then who has the recovered video?”

A long pause.

“I do.”

Another pause.

“And I’m standing outside your house.”
