Chapter 12 - Thirty-Seven Names

The hearing room went silent.
Ms. Crane stared at the spreadsheet.
The board chair leaned toward the screen.
“What is this?”
Evelyn answered, “A record of bullying complaints apparently reviewed by Assistant Principal Crane.”
“That file is stolen,” Ms. Crane snapped.
Evelyn turned toward her.
“You recognize it?”
Ms. Crane realized the mistake too late.
Charles Vale whispered to his lawyer.
Grace watched the board members scroll through the names.
One woman covered her mouth.
“My nephew is on this list.”
A man in the audience stood.
“My son transferred last year because of those girls.”
Then another parent rose.
“And my daughter stopped coming to school for three weeks.”
The room changed.
What had started as Grace’s disciplinary hearing became something else.
Ms. Crane tried to regain control.
“These are unverified complaints.”
Evelyn nodded. “Exactly. Thirty-seven of them. Eleven closed for ‘insufficient evidence.’”
She clicked again.
The initials L.C. filled the screen.
Board members turned toward Ms. Crane.
Brittany looked at her father.
For the first time, Charles looked angry at his own daughter.
Not because she had hurt anyone.
Because she had exposed the machinery protecting her.
The board chair asked, “Do we have the cafeteria footage?”
The school attorney said, “The file was deleted.”
Evelyn looked toward the back doors.
“Not entirely.”
Officer Reed entered.
Every head turned.
He carried a laptop under one arm.
Ms. Crane stood.
“You’re suspended.”
“From campus duties,” he said. “Not from answering a subpoena.”
Evelyn placed a document on the table.
The board chair read it.
Then she nodded.
Officer Reed connected his laptop.
The full cafeteria video appeared on the screen.
Brittany’s face went white.
Before he pressed play, the board chair received a note from a staff member.
She read it once.
Then twice.
“Officer Reed,” she said slowly, “there’s another student outside asking to testify.”
May you like
Grace already knew who it was.
Maya had come back.
