Chapter 14 - The Price of Silence

Maya’s mother entered through the side door.
Elena Torres still wore her work uniform from Vale Motors.
She looked terrified.
Charles Vale stared at her as if she had betrayed him personally.
Elena placed her phone on the table.
“For six years I cleaned offices for Mr. Vale,” she said. “I heard things. I ignored them because I needed the job.”
Charles spoke quietly. “Elena, think carefully.”
She looked at him.
“I finally did.”
She played an audio recording.
Charles’s voice filled the room.
Linda, handle the complaints. If the girls get dragged into hearings every time somebody cries, the scholarship donors start asking questions.
Ms. Crane’s voice answered.
And if parents push?
Remind them how much this school loses if funding disappears.
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Grace looked at Brittany.
Brittany stared at the floor.
For the first time, she looked sixteen instead of untouchable.
Charles’s lawyer leaned toward him, whispering fast.
The board chair called for a closed executive session.
The room erupted.
Parents shouted questions. Reporters rushed toward the hallway. Students texted faster than anyone could stop them.
Evelyn pulled Grace and David toward a side exit.
“This is about to get ugly.”
Grace looked back at Maya.
“What happens to her mom?”
“We protect her if we can.”
Outside, television vans were already arriving.
Grace’s phone buzzed nonstop.
The viral clip was still spreading.
But now another video had appeared beside it.
Maya’s full recording.
The caption was simple:
HERE’S WHAT THEY CUT OUT.
Within twenty minutes, the comments turned.
Within thirty, local reporters named Charles Vale.
Within forty, the school district announced an independent investigation.
Grace should have felt relieved.
Instead, Officer Reed walked toward her with a grim expression.
“What?” she asked.
He held up his phone.
“The security server room was just accessed.”
“By who?”
He shook his head.
“Doesn’t matter.”
May you like
“Why not?”
“Because somebody wiped the last two years of archived footage.”
