Chapter 15 - The Backup Nobody Knew

The deletion should have destroyed the case.
Instead, it exposed how desperate someone had become.
The district’s technology director arrived that afternoon with two state investigators.
Grace, David, Maya, and Elena waited in a conference room while adults moved in and out of the building.
Officer Reed sat near the window.
“They wiped the school server,” he explained. “But our cameras don’t only save there.”
Grace remembered what he had said days earlier.
Cloud backup.
The technology director connected a secure laptop.
“Three years ago, the district’s insurance carrier required redundant off-site storage after a vandalism claim.”
Ms. Crane apparently never knew.
Neither did Charles.
The archived files began loading.
Hallways.
Parking lots.
Cafeteria.
Gym entrance.
One incident after another.
Brittany shoving a student against a locker.
Kayla dumping a backpack into a trash can.
A group blocking a freshman from leaving the restroom.
Then something worse.
Video from Ms. Crane’s office.
Students entering in tears.
Parents leaving angry.
Brittany entering through a side door after one complaint.
Charles Vale arriving fifteen minutes later.
The technology director froze the screen.
“There are dozens of meetings.”
Evelyn stared at the timeline.
“Can we get audio?”
“No. Cameras only.”
Officer Reed pointed at one date.
“That’s the day Jordan Lee withdrew.”
Grace knew the name from the spreadsheet.
Jordan had disappeared from school in October.
The next clip showed Jordan leaving Ms. Crane’s office with his mother.
Brittany stood in the hallway watching them.
Then Ms. Crane stepped out and handed Brittany a sheet of paper.
Jordan’s complaint.
Grace felt sick.
The technology director zoomed in.
The paper had Jordan’s name, address, and parent phone number.
Protected student information.
Evelyn stood.
“That changes everything.”
A state investigator nodded.
“Yes.”
May you like
At that exact moment, someone knocked on the conference-room door.
Jordan Lee and his mother were standing outside.
