Chapter 18 - The Fall

Charles Vale took one step toward his daughter.
Officer Reed moved between them.
“Sir, stop.”
“This is my family.”
“This is a school.”
Charles pointed at Grace. “She has manipulated everyone in this building.”
Grace almost answered.
Brittany beat her to it.
“No, Dad.”
The cafeteria went silent again.
“You did.”
Charles stared at her.
Brittany’s hands shook, but she held the notebook against her chest.
“You made me think consequences were for other people.”
“Do not do this here.”
“You told me Crane would erase the reports.”
“Brittany.”
“You told me Maya’s mother would lose her job if Maya talked.”
Charles’s face changed.
Too late.
Students were already recording.
Officer Reed lifted one hand.
“Mr. Vale, don’t say anything else.”
Charles looked around and finally seemed to understand the world had changed.
Not because he had lost money.
Because he had lost control of the story.
The investigators took Brittany’s notebook.
That afternoon, the district announced Ms. Crane’s termination proceedings.
The state opened an inquiry into student-record misuse and retaliation.
Vale Motors suspended Elena’s supervisor after evidence showed he had threatened her job.
Charles resigned from the school foundation.
More families came forward.
The local paper stopped calling it a cafeteria fight.
They called it a systemic failure.
Grace read the headline at home while David cooked spaghetti.
“You okay?” he asked.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s allowed.”
She looked at the photo accompanying the article.
It showed her walking into the hearing beside Maya.
No food on her jacket.
No fight.
Just two girls refusing to disappear.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Jordan.
CHECK THE SCHOOL WEBSITE.
Grace opened it.
A new announcement filled the front page.
Tomorrow at noon, the school would hold a student forum.

And under “Student Speakers,” Grace’s name was listed first.
Nobody had asked her.
