Chapter 13 - Maya Speaks

Maya walked into the hearing room holding her aunt’s hand.
She looked smaller than Grace remembered.
But she did not look away.
The board chair asked if she understood that she needed to tell the truth.
Maya nodded.
“I recorded what happened to Grace.”
Brittany’s lawyer stood. “We object to—”
“This is not a courtroom,” the chair said. “Sit down.”
Maya placed her phone on the table.
“My video starts before the school camera angle.”
It showed Brittany filling a bucket with leftover milk and sauce from trays.
It showed Kayla laughing.
It showed them discussing which student would get the most views.
Then Brittany said one sentence that killed the room.
“Crane will fix it if she complains.”
Ms. Crane’s face drained of color.
Maya continued.
“They did it to me last month. Not with food. They locked me in the equipment room.”
Her aunt squeezed her hand.
“I reported it. Ms. Crane told me there wasn’t enough evidence. Then she made me sign a statement saying I had misunderstood a joke.”
The board chair looked directly at Ms. Crane.
“Did you do that?”
“No.”
Maya opened her backpack.
“I kept the first version.”
She handed over a photocopy.
Two signatures sat at the bottom.
Maya Torres.
Linda Crane.
Charles Vale stood abruptly.
“This has gone far enough.”
Grace looked at him.
He wasn’t afraid of the students.
He was afraid of paper.
The board chair ordered everyone to remain seated.
Officer Reed finally played the full cafeteria footage.
Nobody spoke while the tray came down.
Nobody spoke while Kayla shoved Grace.
Nobody spoke while Brittany grabbed her hair and swung.
When the video ended, the chair turned toward Grace.
“You were defending yourself.”
Grace exhaled.
Then Maya whispered, “There’s more.”
May you like
She looked at Charles Vale.
“My mom recorded him too.”
