Chapter 1 - THE SCREAM BEHIND THE DOOR

The first thing Claire heard was not applause.

It was her daughter screaming.

"MOM!"

Claire dropped the garment bag in the middle of the backstage hall and ran.

Now the dressing-room door was half closed.

Claire hit it with both hands.

Mia was on the floor beside a wooden bench. The bow had been ripped off. One strap of the dress hung loose. Her hair was tangled around her face, and a bright red handprint was rising on her left cheek.

Vanessa stood over her.

"You think crying is going to save you?" Vanessa hissed.

Mia looked up. "Mom."

That one word broke something in Claire.

"What did you do?"

Vanessa turned, annoyed instead of ashamed. "Stay out of this."

Claire crossed the room before she knew she had moved.

She drove Vanessa backward into the metal lockers so hard the doors rattled. Vanessa gasped. Claire slapped her once across the face.

"Don't touch my child."

Claire ignored her. She dropped to her knees and pulled off her own coat, wrapping it around Mia's torn costume.

"Baby, look at me. Are you hurt anywhere else?"

Mia could barely answer. "She said Dad would be ashamed of me."

Claire's head snapped up.

Vanessa's expression changed.

Then a voice boomed from the speakers mounted in the hall.

"Your father will be ashamed."

Vanessa went pale.

The stage microphone was still live.

And from the doorway, the theater manager whispered, "Oh my God. Everyone heard that."

Then the red light above the hallway camera blinked.

Vanessa looked at it.

Claire looked at it too.

And both women understood at the same time: this was no longer one person's word against another.

But before Claire could say anything, Vanessa screamed, "Security! She attacked me!"

Footsteps thundered toward the room.
