Chapter 10 - DELETE DOESN'T MEAN GONE

Daniel slammed both hands on the table. "She's deleting everything."

Claire took a breath. "Don't touch the computer."

"What?"

"Don't click anything. We call someone who knows what they're doing."

Claire called her attorney, Rachel Kim.

"Tell me only facts," Rachel said.

Claire did.

When she finished, Rachel was silent for two seconds.

"First, do not contact Vanessa. Second, preserve every device. Third, Daniel should change no passwords until we document access. Fourth, take screenshots of the deletion notice if it's still visible."

Daniel whispered, "There's a trash folder."

Rachel heard him. "Do not restore it yet. Photograph the screen first."

Daniel's face twisted with anger. "She was building a custody case behind my back."

Rachel replied, "Maybe. Or she may claim you knew. Assume every sentence you say from now on could appear in court."

Claire asked, "What about me hitting her?"

"You tell the truth. Self-defense of another person can be relevant, but your timing and the amount of force matter. You pushed and slapped her after the immediate strike on Mia had already happened. Don't pretend there is no risk."

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Mia stood at the top of the stairs in pajamas.

"Mom?"

Claire went to her.

"I can't sleep."

"That's okay."

Mia looked at Daniel. "Did you find the folder?"

Daniel nodded.

Mia's face crumpled with relief and shame at the same time.

"She told me nobody would believe me because she had proof I was happy."

Daniel said, "Mia, I believe you."

Mia stared at him.

Then she said, "There's another person who knows."

Claire crouched. "Who?"

"Lily's mom."

"Why?"

"Because Vanessa grabbed me at rehearsal last month."

May you like

Claire's heart pounded.

Mia added, "Lily took a picture."
