Chapter 15 - WHAT DANIEL HAD SAID

"Did you call me unstable?" Claire asked.
Daniel's eyes dropped.
Rachel said, "Answer carefully, but answer."
Daniel exhaled. "Once."
"It was after our divorce. We had that fight about Christmas."
"You changed pickup time three times and then blamed me when Mia missed dinner with my parents."
"I know."
"And you told Vanessa I was unstable?"
"I said you could get explosive when you were angry."
Claire stared at him.
The next morning, Vanessa arrived at court in a navy suit with no visible makeup and a faint bruise on her cheek.
Rachel played the audio.
Evan argued that the source of the slap was unknown.
Rachel produced the urgent-care photograph.
Then Lily's photo.
Then screenshots of the MIA folder.
The judge's expression changed little, but her questions grew sharper.
Finally Daniel testified.
Evan asked, "Have you ever described Claire as explosive?"
"Yes."
Claire felt the room tilt.
Evan nodded. "So her attack on Vanessa did not surprise you."
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then at Mia's empty seat - the judge had kept her out of the courtroom.
He said, "What surprised me was that Claire stopped after one slap."
Evan frowned. "Excuse me?"
Daniel continued, "If I had walked into a room and found my daughter on the floor after hearing what Vanessa said on that recording, I don't know how well I would have controlled myself."
The judge raised a hand. "Mr. Morgan, answer only the question asked."
"Yes, Your Honor."
After testimony, the judge denied Vanessa's request for a protective order against Claire and issued a temporary no-contact order keeping Vanessa away from Mia pending investigation.
"Mia is not with the victim advocate."
Claire's blood turned to ice.

"What do you mean, not with her?"
Rachel said, "Someone told Mia that Daniel sent them to pick her up."
