Chapter 18 - NO MORE QUIET DEALS

She would accept a long-term no-contact order with Mia.

She would withdraw her complaint against Claire.

She would agree not to pursue any civil claim.

In exchange, she wanted Claire and Daniel to support "a non-custodial resolution" of the criminal investigation and agree not to release evidence publicly.

Claire read the offer twice.

"She wants us to help this disappear."

Rachel said, "She wants control over the ending."

Claire looked through the office window at Mia building a tower of plastic blocks.

"I don't want revenge," she said.

Daniel said, "She tried to take Mia from the courthouse."

"I know."

"She hit her."

"I know."

"She built a fake custody file."

"I know."

Claire turned back. "But I also hit Vanessa. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life teaching Mia that the person with the most justified anger gets to do anything."

Two days later, prosecutors filed charges related to child endangerment, assault, evidence tampering, and witness intimidation. The exact charges would be fought over, reduced, argued, and negotiated. But the no-contact order became permanent.

Vanessa was no longer allowed near Mia.

When Claire explained it to Mia, she kept it simple.

"I was right to protect you," she said. "I was wrong to hit after you were already safe."

Mia looked confused. "But she deserved it."

Claire's chest tightened.

"That's the dangerous part," she said. "When we start deciding people deserve whatever we do to them, we can become someone we don't want to be."

Mia thought about that.

Then she asked, "Do I have to dance again?"

"No."

"Can I?"

Claire smiled carefully. "If you want."

The academy had rescheduled the recital for the following month.

Mia looked down at the repaired pink dress.

"I want to."

Then she touched the empty place where the bow had been.

"But I don't want that bow back."
