Chapter 17 - THE EDITED VIDEO

The video began with Claire shoving Vanessa into the lockers.
It did not show Mia on the floor.
It did not include Vanessa's voice.
It cut away before Claire wrapped Mia in her coat.
Twelve seconds.
That was all.
And it was devastating.
By the time Vanessa was taken into custody for questioning about the courthouse incident and possible witness intimidation, the video had already spread beyond the parent group.
Daniel paced. "We need to release the audio."
"No," Rachel said. "Not while Mia is part of an active investigation."
"They're destroying Claire."
Rachel looked at him. "Your job is not to win the internet today. Your job is to protect your daughter."
Claire stared at the blank phone screen.
Mia sat in the next room with a child interviewer.
At four that afternoon, the theater released a statement confirming that the viral video was incomplete and that evidence had been provided to law enforcement.
At five, Emma's mother authorized police to confirm that a separate audio recording existed.
At six, Lily's mother posted one sentence:
"I saw enough weeks ago to know the viral clip does not tell the story."
Then Officer Ramirez called.
"We recovered the corrupted interior segment."
Claire stood.
"You have the dressing-room video?"
"Yes."
"Does it show the slap?"
A pause.
"It shows all of it."
Claire closed her eyes.
Ramirez continued. "Vanessa tearing the bow. Vanessa striking Mia. Vanessa pushing her down. You entering. Your shove. Your slap. Everything."
Daniel whispered, "Thank God."
Claire did not feel thankful yet.
She asked, "What happens now?"
Ramirez said, "Now Vanessa's attorney gets a copy."
Rachel's phone rang thirty seconds later.
She answered, listened, then looked at Claire.
"Vanessa wants a deal."
Claire's expression hardened.
May you like
"What kind of deal?"
Rachel said, "One where she admits almost nothing."
