Chapter 11 - THE PICTURE FROM LAST MONTH

"I was going to call you," she said.

Claire's voice was controlled. "Please tell me what happened."

Samantha brought them into the kitchen.

Lily sat at the table with her phone.

"I saw Vanessa grab Mia by the arm after rehearsal," Lily said. "Mia said she was fine."

Claire closed her eyes.

Lily opened a photo.

It showed Vanessa's hand clamped around Mia's upper arm. Mia's face was turned away. Vanessa's fingers were digging hard enough to wrinkle the fabric.

The timestamp was four weeks old.

Daniel sat down heavily.

Samantha said, "I should have called you that night. I told myself maybe I misunderstood. I didn't want to start trouble between parents."

Lily looked at Daniel. "Mia told me Vanessa said crying was manipulation."

Daniel's jaw clenched.

"Anything else?" he asked.

Lily hesitated. "Vanessa used to make her stand in the laundry room when she got upset."

Claire's head snapped around. "What?"

Daniel looked confused. "We don't even use that room."

Lily said, "Mia called it the quiet room."

Claire stood. "We're going to the police."

Daniel nodded.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man said, "Mr. Morgan, this is Evan Hart. I represent Vanessa."

Vanessa's cousin.

Daniel switched to speaker.

Evan continued, "We are filing for a protective order against Claire based on her violent attack last night. Vanessa is also prepared to provide evidence that Claire has manipulated Mia into making false allegations."

Claire's hand tightened around the back of a chair.

Daniel said, "You sent me an emergency custody draft three weeks ago."

Silence.

Then Evan said, "I suggest you get your own lawyer."

The line went dead.

And five minutes later, Claire's doorbell camera sent an alert.
