Chapter 8 - THREE WEEKS OF LIES

Daniel looked stunned. "I didn't ask for this."
"Then why is it on your phone?"
"I don't know."
Vanessa, seated twenty feet away with another officer, watched them carefully.
Daniel opened the email.
The draft accused Claire of "emotional instability," "aggressive behavior," and "parental interference." It suggested seeking temporary primary custody of Mia.
"Did you talk to him?"
"Once, at dinner. Not about this."
Claire's voice sharpened. "Did you ever tell Vanessa you wanted more custody?"
"I said I wanted more weekends. That's it."
Mia was sitting with a paramedic now, getting her cheek checked. Claire kept one eye on her.
Daniel read further and cursed under his breath.
"What?"
"There are dates in here. Times you supposedly screamed at me during pickups."
"You know that didn't happen."
"I know."
"Then where did she get the dates?"
Daniel stopped scrolling.
His face changed.
"From my calendar."
Claire stared at him.
Officer Ramirez returned. "Claire, the paramedic recommends you take Mia to urgent care for documentation. We're also making a child welfare referral because of the allegation of repeated behavior."
Claire nodded.
Then she said, "Vanessa told me I had to practice lying."
Claire gripped the steering wheel.
"What did she make you lie about?"
"That I liked staying there."
Claire's chest hurt.
Mia continued. "And she took pictures."
"Pictures of what?"
"Me smiling."
Claire pulled into the urgent care parking lot and turned around.
Mia's eyes were full of fear.
"She said if I told you what happened at Dad's house, she would show the judge the pictures and say I was making everything up."
Claire reached for her.
May you like
Then Mia whispered one more thing.
"She has a folder with my name on it."
