Chapter 1 - The Slap Before the Truth

Adrian Cole slapped the woman who had just saved his baby's life. By the time he learned the truth, his marriage was already breaking.
The stroller lay on its side at the foot of the staircase. One wheel still spun. Ten-month-old Emma was screaming against Clara's chest, and Vanessa, Adrian's younger sister, stood beside the railing with tears shining on her cheeks.
"She pushed the stroller!" Vanessa cried. "Adrian, I tried to stop her. She was furious with me, and she pushed Emma toward the stairs!"
Adrian dropped his keys. He had come home early because Emma had a fever that morning. Now he saw her red face, the overturned stroller, and his wife's trembling hands. He did not ask a single question.
"Give me my daughter," he said.
"Adrian, listen. Vanessa--"
"Give her to me!"
Clara surrendered Emma because the baby needed calm, not a tug-of-war. Adrian carried her two steps away and handed her to Vanessa, the very woman who had put Emma in danger. Then he turned back and struck Clara across the face.
The sound cracked through the entry hall. Clara stumbled against the console table. A framed family photograph tipped over and shattered.
"I was saving her," Clara whispered. "I caught the stroller. I was saving our little girl."
"Don't lie to me!" Adrian shouted.
"Dad. Stop."
His sixteen-year-old daughter, Olivia, stood on the stairs, her face white. She held her phone so tightly that her knuckles shook.
"Not now, Liv."
"You have to see this. Right now."
She connected her phone to the living room television. The picture showed the upstairs landing. Vanessa looked left, released the stroller's brake, and shoved it forward. The stroller rolled toward the stairs. Clara appeared from the kitchen, sprinted, and caught the handle just as the front wheels dropped. She fell with it, twisted it against the banister, and lifted Emma free.
No one spoke when the clip ended. Vanessa's crying stopped as though someone had switched it off.
Adrian looked at the red mark rising on Clara's cheek. He reached for her, but she stepped away.
"Don't," she said. "You don't get to touch me."

Olivia looked at her aunt. "And that's not even the worst thing I recorded."
