Chapter 11 - A Witness Who Wasn't There

The emergency petition arrived with a demand for a hearing in three days. Vanessa claimed Clara had created an unsafe home and that Emma needed to be placed temporarily with a relative. Her lawyer attached photographs of the fallen stroller without mentioning the video.
"She took pictures while Emma was crying," Clara said. "She was building a case before anyone knew if the baby was hurt."
Clara's attorney, Marisol Vega, reviewed the papers. "The court isn't going to hand your child to her because she tells a convincing story. But we answer every allegation and give the judge the original footage."
A county child-protection worker visited Tessa's house that afternoon. Clara showed her Emma's medical records, the police report, and the safe sleeping area. She answered questions without making Olivia responsible for protecting her.
"I know this feels awful," the worker said. "My job is to check, not to assume the report is true."
That evening, Marisol received a sealed supplement to Vanessa's petition. The supposed eyewitness was Diane Foster, a former nanny the family sometimes hired for evenings out.
Clara called Diane. "Were you at our house Tuesday?"
"Tuesday? I was getting chemotherapy at St. Anne's. Why?"
Clara explained. Diane went quiet, then furious. "I never saw that stroller. I never signed any statement. Somebody used my name."
Diane agreed to send her hospital appointment record and speak with the court. Clara thanked her, ashamed that someone already dealing with illness had been pulled into Vanessa's plan.
A new message reached Marisol just before midnight. Diane's signature on the petition matched an old childcare invoice down to a stray pen mark. It had been copied.
Marisol called Clara. "We can prove the witness statement is forged."

Then she added, "Vanessa's lawyer says there are two more witnesses. Both are people Olivia knows."
