Chapter 9 - The Account Named for a Baby

Clara stared at the account summary Adrian's attorney sent through Tessa. Emma's full legal name appeared at the top, beside a bank number Clara had never seen. She had not opened the account. She had not signed the paperwork. Her daughter could not even say her own name.
"They're using her identity," Clara said.
Tessa set the kettle down. "Then we tell the investigator."
The account had been created as a custodial education fund, but the opening form used a scanned signature from paperwork Clara had signed at Emma's birth. A financial consultant could have obtained the image from an old benefits file. Whoever created the account had used it to move money again.
Adrian's attorney explained that the name on the account did not prove Emma owned the money. It proved somebody wanted a familiar name between the stolen funds and the person collecting them.
Olivia came over after school, accompanied by a neighbor Clara trusted. She settled beside Emma on the rug and made her laugh with a stuffed rabbit. For twenty minutes, the house was quiet enough to feel normal.
Then Olivia took a second phone from her backpack. "I found this taped under Aunt Vanessa's desk. It's old, but it still turns on."
Clara almost told her she should never have taken it. Instead, she asked whether Vanessa had been there. Olivia shook her head; the desk was in the common office, and Adrian had asked her to stay away from the building afterward.
"Don't open anything else," Clara said. "We need to give it to your dad's attorney."
A notification lit the screen before Olivia could switch it off. It was a message from Marcus Pike, sent to Vanessa's hidden number.
YOU SAID THE BABY WOULD BE OUT OF THE STROLLER BEFORE IT HIT THE STAIRS.
Clara read it twice. The room seemed to narrow around her.
