Chapter 3 - Sirens in the Driveway

The ambulance arrived six minutes later. Clara had called emergency services instead of gambling on a car ride with a crying infant. A paramedic named Becca took Emma from her arms only after explaining every move.

"She's alert," Becca said. "That's good. We still need a pediatric examination. Did she hit her head?"

"The stroller struck the railing," Clara answered. "I caught the frame before it reached the last step. I don't think Emma hit anything, but I can't be sure."

Adrian stood beside the door. "I can explain what happened."

"Then tell the truth," Clara said without looking at him.

Two patrol officers came in. Olivia gave them the original video and explained that the recording had started before the stroller moved. One officer took Vanessa's statement in the dining room. Her sobs carried through the doorway, punctuated by claims that Clara had always been unstable.

"Do you want to report the assault by your husband?" the other officer asked Clara quietly.

Adrian flinched. He wanted to say he had panicked. He wanted to tell them he was a good father who had made one terrible mistake. Neither sentence changed what he had done.

"Yes," Clara said. "He struck me in the face. Please put it in the report."

"She's telling the truth," Adrian said.

Vanessa came out of the dining room. "This is insane. You're letting her turn our family into a police case?"

"You did that," Olivia said.

At the hospital, a pediatrician checked Emma's eyes, breathing, and movement. She ordered observation and explained the symptoms they needed to watch for. Emma's cries eased into hiccups as Clara rocked her. An ice pack rested against Clara's cheek.

Adrian tried to enter the exam room. A nurse stepped into his path. "Mrs. Cole asked for privacy."

Across the corridor, Olivia met his eyes. "You know she warned you about Aunt Vanessa, right? Last week. The week before. You told her she was imagining things."

Adrian remembered those arguments. He had walked away from every one of them.
