Chapter 18 - The Cost of Saying Yes

Adrian's interview lasted four hours. The detective asked him about the trust, the company invoices, the signature packet, and every warning Clara had sent. Adrian answered without making Vanessa responsible for his own carelessness.
The investigators later found records showing that Vanessa and Marcus had altered the signed packet after Adrian returned from the job site. He was not charged with taking Olivia's money. That finding did not erase his failure to pay attention.
He entered a guilty plea in the separate assault case and accepted court-ordered counseling and probation. Clara was informed through her lawyer. She had not been asked to rescue him from the consequences.
"Are you proud of him?" Olivia asked Clara one evening.
"I'm glad he told the truth," Clara said. "That is the minimum. It doesn't undo the hit."
"Do you think you could ever go back?"
Clara watched Emma pull herself upright against the couch. "I don't know what life will look like in a year. But I know I can't live in a house where I had to prove my own innocence with a recording."
Olivia nodded. "Can I still come over?"
"Of course. You don't stop being my family because your dad and I need to live apart."
Weeks passed. Adrian attended counseling, followed a supervised parenting schedule, and returned every call from the trust administrator. He repaired the damage he could measure: bank accounts, unpaid bills, missed work. The damage to trust moved more slowly.
Before Vanessa's plea hearing, her attorney sent Clara an offer. Vanessa would assist in recovering the missing funds if Clara publicly described the stroller incident as an accident and withdrew her opposition to future contact.
Clara read the proposal once.
