Chapter 4 - The Account With Her Name

Adrian called the bank from the hospital parking lot. The representative would not discuss details without a verification process, but she confirmed that a withdrawal request had been initiated shortly after the police arrived at his house.
"Freeze it," Adrian said. "That is my daughter's college trust."
"The request was made with the trustee's credentials," the representative answered. "We can place a temporary review hold. You will need to contact the trust administrator."
Vanessa had served as financial administrator for the family company for seven years. After Adrian's first wife, Mae, died, she also helped manage the trust Mae had established for Olivia. Adrian had never questioned her monthly summaries. Vanessa handled spreadsheets; he handled job sites and employees. That division had once felt like teamwork.
Now he could not stop seeing her hands on the stroller.
He called Vanessa. "Did you try to empty Olivia's account?"
"I moved money to protect it," she said. "Clara's making accusations, and I don't intend to let her take what belongs to our family."
"It's Olivia's money. Not yours."
"You're emotional. Let me explain when you get home."
"Don't go near another account."
"You can't order me around. I'm a trustee, too."
Adrian ended the call and found three unanswered emails from Clara. One had the subject line PLEASE LOOK AT THIS. Attached were bank statements marked with yellow circles. Another contained invoices paid to a company called Briarfield Supply. The third was sent three days earlier: Adrian, I'm scared Vanessa will do something reckless if she knows I've asked for an audit.
He had never opened any of them. He had told Clara he was busy closing a construction contract.
Inside the hospital, Olivia sat beside Emma's crib and drew a tiny star on a paper cup to make Clara smile. Adrian watched through the glass but stayed outside.
Clara's phone rang. She answered, listened, and stood so fast her chair scraped the floor.
