Chapter 17 - The Boarding Pass

Vanessa reached the small county airport with a rolling suitcase, a new phone, and a confidence that vanished when she saw two detectives beside the check-in desk.

"Ms. Cole, we need to speak with you," one said.

"About what? My attorney handles everything."

"You have the right to contact your attorney. You're also under arrest on charges related to the stroller incident and the financial investigation."

She dropped her suitcase handle. Then she started talking. She said Clara had been jealous. She said Olivia had turned against her. She said Adrian had approved every transfer and was trying to blame her because his marriage had failed.

The detective did not argue. He read the required warning, secured her phone under the warrant, and led her away.

When the arrest reached the family, Olivia did not cheer. She sat at Clara's kitchen table, feeding Emma small pieces of banana and watching her sister mash them into the tray.

"I thought I'd feel happy," Olivia said.

"You can feel relieved and sad at the same time," Clara answered. "She was your aunt before she became the person who hurt us."

"I don't miss who she is now. I miss who I thought she was."

Clara put an arm around her shoulders. They stayed that way until Emma demanded another piece of banana.

The next morning, Adrian received notice that investigators wanted a formal interview about his signatures. Vanessa's lawyer had turned over a statement claiming Adrian had directed the missing trust payments.

He called his attorney immediately and agreed to the interview.

As he ended the call, another envelope arrived. It contained the complaint for his own assault on Clara.
