Chapter 11 - THE DEBT HER FATHER LEFT

Emily wanted the contract to be fake.
The agreement dated back fourteen years and involved a silent investor called Northline Capital.
Hart Design had received eight million dollars during a near-bankruptcy nobody in the family had known about.
In return, Northline received hidden rights to several patents and future redevelopment profits.
Emily looked at Judith.
"Why wasn't this in the books?"
"Because your father hid it."
"And you knew."
"I helped him survive it."
"You lied to me for fourteen years."
"I protected your husband."
"No. You protected the lie."
A clause caught her attention.
If Hart Design changed ownership through death or incapacity, Northline could force immediate repayment.
"This is why you wanted me removed."
Judith nodded.
"Grant thought he could strip the firm before Northline came for it."
"And you helped him."
"I tried to control him."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"By helping him declare me insane?"
"You don't understand the danger your child created."
"What did you say?"
"Your father amended the Northline agreement after you married."
"If a direct Hart heir was born, the hidden rights reverted to the Hart family trust."
Daniel looked up sharply.
"Meaning Emily's child would eliminate Northline's leverage."
Judith nodded.
"Eventually."
Emily understood.
Grant had known the baby changed everything.
"Who owns Northline?"
"That is the part Grant never told you."
"Who?"
Judith turned back.
"Sloane's father."
Emily felt cold.
Sloane had not wandered into Grant's life by accident.
She was part of the structure surrounding Hart Design.
"Sloane's gone."
"Gone where?"
"She posted bail two hours ago."
Judith looked genuinely surprised.
Then Emily's phone rang.
Sloane.
"Emily," she whispered.

Wind roared behind her.
"Grant has your mother."
