Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO RAN

Detective Velez shoved Emily to the floor.
"Down!"
Another shot exploded beyond the door.
Sloane screamed.
Emergency lights flashed red.
"Suspect moving toward the garage!"
Daniel pulled Emily behind the concrete interview table.
"Stay here."
"Who is shooting?"
"I don't know."
Sloane crawled toward them.
"Grant found me."
Emily looked at her.
"Grant is in custody."
Sloane shook her head.
"Then it's Evan."
"Officer grazed in the shoulder. Suspect escaped through the service garage."
"Evan?"
Emily's skin prickled.
"He came into a police station armed?"
"He came in wearing a maintenance uniform."
Sloane suddenly whispered, "He has the drive."
Everybody looked at her.
"What drive?" Daniel asked.
"The one from the boat."
"You said Evan carried it."
"He did."
"Where did he take it?"
Sloane hesitated.
"If he kills somebody else because you keep protecting yourself, that's on you."
"Grant's lake house."
"Emily's lake house."
Sloane nodded.
"There's a hidden office under the garage."
Emily stared at her.
She had owned the house for eight years.
She knew every room.
"How do you know?"
"Because that's where Grant kept the documents he planned to use after your death."
"What documents?"
"A new will."
Emily laughed once.
"My will is with Daniel."
"Not that one."
Sloane met her eyes.
"The one with your forged signature."
Emily's anger went still.
Sloane continued.
"It leaves the firm, the lake house, and the insurance proceeds to Grant."
"A forged testamentary instrument would collapse under review."
"Not if everybody who could challenge it believed Emily was unstable before she died."
Emails.
Incompetence.
Grant had not planned one lie.
He had built an entire version of her life that would survive her.
"Detective, we located Mercer's transport vehicle."
"And?"
"He's gone."
May you like
Grant had escaped.
And the first place he would go was the house containing the fake will.
