Chapter 16 - THE FIRE ON THE WATER
Grant launched the boat into black water.
Rain began again.
Velez pursued him by patrol boat while Emily stayed with Evelyn at the house.
Grant's second phone sat on the kitchen counter.
He had left it behind.
Emily picked it up.
No passcode.
Messages between Grant and Victor filled the screen.
Push incapacity angle.
Move another 400k before audit.
Pregnancy confirmed.
Accelerate.
Grant: EVAN HAS THE MECHANIC.
There it was.
The murder plan.
Emily forwarded everything to Daniel and Velez.
"Stay here."
Then another.
Grant was firing at the patrol boat.
The second flare struck near the fuel compartment.
Flames flashed along the deck.
"The old service dock."
An officer looked at her.
"What?"
"There's a road behind the east cove."
Grant could reach a highway from there.
Emily grabbed the keys to Evelyn's car.
"No," Evelyn said.
"Mom—"
"No more running toward men with guns."
Emily looked at her mother.
"Take me with you."
"Do it. She knows the property."
They reached the service dock just as Grant's boat slammed against it.
He jumped out with the flare gun and sprinted uphill.
Police shouted.
Grant disappeared into the trees.
Emily turned.
Sloane had followed them in another car.
Grant had grabbed her from behind and pressed the flare gun against her neck.
"Back up!"
Officers stopped.
"Grant, please."
"You don't need her."
Grant looked at her.
"You're right."
He shoved Sloane aside.
