Chapter 3 - THE SECOND PERSON IN HIS OFFICE

"Cancel it," she said.

Daniel was already typing.

"The emergency lock should stop it."

Grant folded his arms.

"This has nothing to do with me."

Emily looked at him.

"Somebody is in your office using your credentials."

"Then maybe your little funeral stunt isn't as smart as you think."

Detective Velez stepped closer.

"Who has access to your office?"

"Half the executive floor."

"That wasn't the question."

"My assistant. IT. Cleaning staff."

"Evan."

Grant turned.

"Don't."

Velez looked at her.

"Who's Evan?"

"Evan Price. Finance director."

Sloane swallowed.

"Grant met him every Thursday after everyone left."

"You lying little—"

"Finish that sentence," Velez said, "and you'll be finishing it in cuffs."

Emily's phone vibrated.

Someone was trying to wipe the company's internal audit archive.

Emily's blood went cold.

"We need to get to the office."

"You need a hospital," Evelyn said.

"Mom, if that server gets wiped, Grant gets exactly what he wants."

Daniel looked toward Velez.

"We have mirrored backups off-site."

Emily shook her head.

"Not the one I found last week."

"You know what I'm talking about."

"I have no idea."

Emily stepped close enough that only he could hear her.

"The blue ledger."

His smile disappeared.

That was all she needed.

Twenty minutes later, detectives escorted Grant and Sloane to separate cars while Daniel drove Emily and Evelyn to Hart Design Group.

Velez arrived behind them with two officers.

They entered through the lobby.

The security guard was gone.

His chair was tipped over.

"Stay behind us," Velez said.

Sixteen.

Fifteen.

Someone was coming down.

The elevator doors opened.

"Police! Stop!"

The man hit the crash bar and disappeared into the rain.

Emily recognized the back of his jacket.

"Evan!"

He looked over his shoulder.

For one second, their eyes met.

The vehicle sped away.

Daniel stared after it.

"That wasn't Grant's car."

Emily looked at the license plate before it vanished.

She knew those numbers.

They belonged to Sloane's company SUV.

Someone else had been driving it.
