Chapter 20 - WHAT SHE BUILT AFTER THE LIES

Emily returned to Hart Design on a Monday morning six months after the funeral.

She was eight months pregnant.

The lobby went silent when she walked in.

Emily hated attention.

That day, she let herself accept it.

Not because she had won.

Because she had survived.

"No family should own forever what hundreds of people spend their lives building."

Emily completed what he had started.

She kept control long enough to stabilize the firm.

Then she transferred forty percent of the company to the people who worked there.

"You're giving away millions," one director said.

Emily smiled.

"No."

"I'm giving back something that was never supposed to belong to one family forever."

"You okay?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Your father would be proud."

Emily touched the old diamond bracelet around her wrist.

The clasp no longer held secrets.

Daniel had removed the memory card and placed it in evidence.

Anything valuable could be stolen if nobody watched who was reaching for it.

Three weeks later, Grant's trial began.

He entered court without cameras, charm, or Sloane beside him.

He looked smaller.

The jury convicted him on every major count, including the attack on Emily and the homicide of Robert Hart.

Victor accepted a plea after Sloane testified against him.

Judith was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction.

Sloane avoided prison on the most serious charges because of her cooperation, but she lost her father's money, her apartment, and the life she had built around other people's wealth.

Two months later, Emily gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She named her Rose Hart Mercer only long enough for the hospital paperwork.

Then she legally changed both their last names to Hart.

Evelyn held Rose near the window while morning light filled the room.

"She's stubborn," Evelyn said.

"Good."

"Runs in the family."

"So do secrets."

Emily reached for her hand.

"We're ending that part."

A year after the staged funeral, Emily returned to St. Matthew's.

Not for a service.

For a charity design award funded by Hart employees.

"Thinking about that day?"

"I thought winning meant watching Grant's face when I sat up."

"Didn't it?"

Emily smiled.

"For about five minutes."

She took Rose into her arms.

"Then I learned winning is waking up without being afraid of what someone is doing behind your back."

Evelyn kissed her daughter's temple.

"Your father would like that answer better."

Emily looked toward the altar.

"So do I."

"Careful."

"I don't think I need this anymore."

Evelyn looked at the bracelet that had exposed an affair, a theft, a murder plot, and fourteen years of lies.

"What should I do with it?"

Emily thought for a second.

"Put it somewhere nobody has to hide anything inside it."

Outside, the rain had stopped.

Emily carried her daughter through the church doors into the sun.

And he had mistaken a coffin for the end of Emily Hart's story.

May you like

It wasn't.

It was the place where she finally stopped letting other people write it.
