Chapter 19 - THE DEATH BEFORE THE MARRIAGE

The truth was worse because Grant had not acted alone.

Robert Hart had taken digoxin for a heart condition, but the toxicology result showed nearly triple his prescribed level.

At the time, doctors blamed accidental double dosing.

Nobody investigated.

Daniel placed an old pharmacy log on the table.

Grant had picked up Robert's prescription two days before his death.

"Why would the pharmacy give it to him?" Emily asked.

"He claimed he was your fiancé and Robert had authorized it."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"I let him into our family."

Emily looked at her.

"I did too."

"But I knew Robert hated him."

"You thought Dad was being controlling."

Evelyn nodded through tears.

"I defended Grant to you."

Emily sat beside her mother.

"Grant's lawyer wants a deal."

Emily laughed without humor.

"Of course he does."

"He'll admit to financial fraud and attempted coercion if prosecutors drop the murder count involving your father."

"No."

"Emily—"

"No."

Velez studied her.

"The older case is harder."

"Then make it hard."

Daniel nodded.

"We also have Victor's messages."

Victor had known about the digoxin.

Every person had made a choice.

That mattered to Emily.

Sloane signed a cooperation agreement the next morning.

She admitted the affair, the marina trip, the stolen evidence case, and her father's plan to pressure Hart Design.

"It's done. He won't be a problem anymore."

Emily turned it off.

She did not need to hear it twice.

Three months later, Grant was indicted on charges that included attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, forgery, kidnapping, and Robert Hart's homicide.

Victor faced conspiracy and financial crimes.

Daniel brought her father's last sealed instruction.

It had been stored with the original trust and could only be opened after Northline's rights were terminated.

Emily broke the seal.

The first line made her cry.

"Emily, if you survived the people who confused love with ownership, don't preserve what I built."

"Change it."
