Chapter 17 - THE CHILD HE COULDN'T CONTROL

Emily did not move.
"You knew about the baby," she said.
"From the day you bought the vitamins."
"You had me followed."
"You were hiding things from me."
"I was hiding a pregnancy while you were stealing millions and sleeping with Sloane."
Grant's eyes flicked toward the officers.
"Tell them to lower their weapons."
Emily did not look back.
"You heard him."
Velez lowered her gun a fraction.
Others followed.
"Why did the baby scare you?"
"It didn't scare me."
"Victor said otherwise."
"Victor cared about the clause."
"And you?"
"I cared about you becoming untouchable."
Emily finally understood.
The baby meant the company could no longer be transferred through incapacity without court oversight protecting the unborn heir.
The trust would tighten.
Grant's access would shrink.
"You were running out of time."
"I had spent six years being introduced as Emily Hart's husband."
"So you tried to become my widower."
"I wanted a life that was mine."
"Then you should have built one."
He raised the flare gun.
Sloane moved first.
She slammed into his side.
The flare fired into the trees.
Emily dropped beside her.
"Are you hurt?"
Sloane held her cheek.
"Go."
Grant reached the burning patrol dock.
He tried to jump into a second skiff.
Velez drove him face-down and cuffed one wrist.
He screamed Emily's name.
Not in love.
In fury.
"This isn't over!"
"It is for you."
"You think your mother is innocent?"
Emily froze.
Grant smiled through blood on his lip.
"Ask Evelyn who signed the first Northline guarantee."
May you like
Emily's heart sank.
Because there was still one signature in the old contract she had not been able to read.
