Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN HE TOOK INSTEAD

Evelyn's coat was still on the chair near the elevators.

Her phone lay beneath it.

Grant had taken her without anyone seeing.

"How?"

Velez checked security footage.

Grant appeared from a service stairwell.

He pressed something into her side beneath his jacket.

She went with him.

Emily's knees weakened.

"He knows she'll do anything for me."

"He's taking her to the lake house."

"How do you know?"

"Because he called me."

"Why?"

"He wants the blue ledger."

"We don't have it."

"Grant thinks we do."

Sloane whispered, "Evan hid it before he died."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then why call me?"

"Because Grant thinks I know."

Velez took the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Old rail station on Madison."

"Stay there."

"No."

"Sloane—"

"If Grant sees police, Evelyn dies."

The line disconnected.

"Absolutely not."

"That's my mother."

"And Grant wants you emotional and moving without protection."

Emily looked at him.

"What?"

"Why did Grant care enough to take it from your car?"

Emily frowned.

The bracelet had belonged to her grandmother.

Her father gave it to Emily when she became CEO.

Her father used that phrase as a password hint.

She took the bracelet from the evidence envelope.

Daniel examined the clasp.

There was a tiny recessed slot beneath the hinge.

Emily stared at it.

"My father hid data inside the bracelet."

Daniel inserted the card into an offline laptop.

One file appeared.

BLUE_LEDGER_BACKUP.pdf.

Daniel opened the file.

Hundreds of transactions filled the screen.

Grant.

Evan.

EVELYN HART.
