Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO WROTE THE LIE

Arthur Bell had prepared for this day.
He arrived with binders.
Bank statements.
Signed orders.
Letters bearing Vincent's name.
He claimed Vincent inherited Vito's scheme when he turned twenty-one.
He claimed Evelyn remained isolated because Vincent wanted control.
The documents looked real.
Some were.
Vincent had signed hundreds of papers over the years.
Trust distributions.
Medical payments.
Security authorizations.
That was the opening Bell used.
He could be innocent of the conspiracy and still responsible for signing without asking.
Sarah said, "We can prove many pages were altered."
"Many?"
"Not all."
One annual medical authorization carried his authentic signature.
It renewed Arden's authority to manage Evelyn's care.
Marcus used to place the packet on his desk.
"Routine family papers."
Every year.
"Say it."
"You signed away her voice without reading."
"Yes."
No excuse.
That mattered.
Bell's protective-custody story collapsed when agents found metadata linking his office to forged versions.
Then Bell offered information.
In exchange, he wanted immunity.
Ortiz refused immunity.
A cooperation agreement was possible.
An abandoned convent outside Woonsocket.
Vincent hated trusting him.
They went anyway.
Inside, they found Evelyn's chair.
Her medication bag.
Food.
No Evelyn.
On the wall, written in lipstick:
NORA - RED BOOK.
"She wrote my name."
Vincent searched the room.
A red book sat beneath the mattress.
It was not a diary.
It was an ASL picture dictionary from Evelyn's rehabilitation.
Mara's notes filled the margins.
One page was folded.
The sign illustrated was:
SISTER.
Below it Mara had written:
If they separate us, find Lucia.
"Who's Lucia?"
Marcus went pale again.
"Mara Velez had a sister."
"Where is she?"
Marcus whispered, "She works for the Calderos."
"Who?"
May you like
"Your housekeeper."
And Lucia had been inside Vincent's home for eighteen years.
