Chapter 8 - THE FATHER HE HATED

Vincent watched the video three times.

Each time, the sentence stayed the same.

Your father was Vito.

"No."

Nora did not argue.

Evelyn's next signs explained.

Before Carlo married her, Evelyn had a brief relationship with Vito.

She became pregnant.

Vito was already married.

Carlo married Evelyn anyway.

Raised Vincent as his own.

Vito agreed to stay away.

Then resentment grew.

He watched Carlo become the father, husband, and leader he believed should have been his.

"So this whole thing—"

Marcus, pale from blood loss but conscious, finished it.

"Was never just business."

Vito wanted Carlo's life.

Then wanted revenge for living outside it.

Nora watched Vincent struggle with a truth he did not choose.

"Carlo was my father."

Yes.

Not blood.

Choice.

That line steadied him.

He said if Vincent wanted Evelyn alive, he would sign over the Caldero Family Foundation, waterfront trusts, and voting rights in three companies.

Not criminal assets.

Legitimate ones.

Vito wanted a public restoration.

A name.

A legacy.

"He wants me to make him Carlo."

Nora said, "Your mother already answered that."

Do not buy me with yourself.

For twenty years everyone had spoken for her.

Now she was telling him not to turn her rescue into another decision made over her head.

Ortiz traced the video metadata.

Uploaded through a rural tower near Foster, Rhode Island.

The farmhouse was empty.

But the basement contained medical restraints.

Old.

Dusty.

And a filing cabinet.

Inside were Evelyn's competency reports from twenty years earlier.

Every report declared her unable to understand language.

Every one signed by the same doctor.

Dr. Philip Arden.

Vincent recognized the name.

"He still treats my mother."

A man who knew Evelyn could sign had spent twenty years certifying she could not communicate.

Tomorrow.
