Chapter 7 - EVELYN TAKEN

Vincent tore through the warehouse like rage could become a searchlight.

It could not.

Nora grabbed his sleeve.

"Stop."

"Don't tell me to stop."

"I'm telling you to think."

That surprised him.

Good.

Marcus had been shot in the shoulder, not killed.

Ortiz's agents secured the building.

A side loading door stood open.

Tire marks led toward the river.

Vito had taken Evelyn.

Vincent wanted every Caldero man in Providence searching.

"If Vito still has people inside your organization, flooding the streets warns him."

Vincent hated taking orders.

Nora could see that.

"Listen to her."

Marcus said Vito owned an old seafood-processing plant across Narragansett Bay.

Officially abandoned.

Unofficially used for meetings.

But Vito would expect Vincent to know that.

"Then where?" Vincent asked.

"Ask Evelyn."

Vincent's face twisted.

"She's not here."

Evelyn had been signing during the warehouse exchange.

Small motions.

Repeated.

Blue house.

Three.

Window.

"God."

"What?"

"Blue House Three."

Caldero families once owned summer cottages near Bristol.

House Three belonged to Vito's mother.

It had been sold years ago.

Or supposedly sold.

Ortiz checked property records.

A shell company owned it.

"Your mother told us where he'd take her."

Vincent absorbed that.

Even kidnapped, Evelyn had left directions.

They reached the blue house before dawn.

Empty.

A chair sat in the center of the living room.

On it, Evelyn's cream shawl.

And a video camera.

Vincent pressed play.

"Your mother wants to tell you a story."

Her hands were free.

Vito clearly assumed the camera would not understand them.

He was wrong.

Vincent, the money is not the secret.

The next signs made her stop.

"What?"

"She says, 'Carlo Caldero was not your biological father.'"

May you like

Evelyn kept signing.

Your father was Vito.
