Chapter 3 - MARA VELEZ

Marcus disappeared through the service exit.

Vincent's men found his abandoned car six blocks away.

No blood.

No phone.

No Marcus.

Nora wanted to leave.

Vincent did not stop her.

That surprised her.

"You walked into this by accident," he said. "You can walk out."

Evelyn signed before Nora could answer:

If she leaves alone, they follow.

"She's right."

Nora hated that.

The police arrived, but Vincent spoke to them through lawyers. Nora knew enough about the Caldero name to understand how little of the truth would enter a public report.

Evelyn did not trust Vincent's system.

She trusted Nora.

That was heavier than flattering.

At a secured townhouse, Nora interpreted while Evelyn told the story.

Mara Velez had been a Deaf Latina therapist from Pawtucket who worked with trauma patients.

She taught Evelyn ASL after the explosion.

Mara quickly realized Evelyn understood far more than the Caldero doctors claimed.

She told Evelyn she would bring Vincent in and teach him too.

The next morning, Mara did not come back.

A doctor told Evelyn she had resigned.

Evelyn never believed it.

"Why didn't you write?" Vincent asked.

I did.

She wrote letters.

Dozens.

She wrote to Vincent.

She wrote to police.

She wrote to a judge.

"I never got one."

Exactly.

"Do you have copies?"

One.

Where?

Evelyn pointed to Vincent.

Your father hid it.

Vincent went still.

"My father died in the explosion."

Before.

Before the blast, Carlo Caldero had discovered someone was moving money through the waterfront unions.

He wrote down names.

He hid a ledger and Evelyn's emergency letter in the same place.

Vincent asked, "Where?"

Saint Agnes.

The Calderos had donated to Saint Agnes Church for three generations.

Then Evelyn added:

Behind your father's confession.

His father had used the same confessional every Sunday.

Then a burner phone on the table rang.

Marcus's voice came through.

"Do not go to Saint Agnes."

Vincent's face hardened.

"Where are you?"

May you like

Marcus whispered, "If you open that wall, your mother dies."

Then the line went dead.
