Chapter 14 - LILY'S FILE

Nora had spent four years believing Lily's death was cruel luck.
Her congenital heart condition worsened.
She entered transplant review.
The appeal failed.
Three months later, she died.
Then Sarah Keene pulled the old hospital foundation records.
One trustee on the transplant charity board:
Arthur Bell.
Another donor with influence:
Caldero Family Foundation.
Nora went cold.
"Why would they care about Lily?"
They did not.
They cared about Nora's father.
Thomas Ellis had been an accountant.
Twenty-two years earlier he worked for Raven Security.
The same shell company in Carlo's ledger.
He discovered suspicious payments.
He quit.
Then disappeared from Nora's life when she was three.
Thomas Ellis died eighteen years ago in Nevada.
Nora had never known.
Before he died, he sent a packet to a Providence attorney.
Arthur Bell.
The packet accused Vito of laundering money through Raven.
Bell buried it.
Years later, when Lily's transplant appeal crossed a charity board Bell influenced, her surname triggered an internal flag.
No direct order to deny treatment appeared.
But emails showed Bell asking the hospital to "apply strict eligibility standards" because the family had "adverse history."
Lily may have been denied a second review because Bell wanted to punish a dead accountant's family.
Not certain murder.
Still monstrous.
Evelyn followed Nora. She did not touch her.
She signed:
I am sorry.
Nora wiped her face.
"You didn't do it."
Evelyn signed:
I know.
Then:
But I know what stolen years feel like.
That was the first comfort that did not feel like pity.
Ortiz confirmed Vito's Fall River warehouse.
But it was empty.
A laptop remained.
On the screen:
LIVE FEED.
Marcus Reed sat in a chair.
Again.
This time he was alone.
Vito's voice came through a speaker.
"Marcus knows where Carlo was buried."
Nora recognized the motion.
Sorry.
"He also knows who really lit the fuse twenty years ago."
Marcus lifted his head.
His lips formed one name.
May you like
Arthur.
Arthur Bell had not merely written the lie.
